5 Storage Solutions for Students - How To Save Space

Space can be a problem for many students living away from home. Whether you’re living in a single room at student halls, or crammed into a student house with some friends, our belongings and furniture can be cumbersome. By the time you’ve got a bed, desk, television, books, draws and a wardrobe in your living space, there can be little room left for anything else.

Thankfully, there are a tonne of techniques you can use to reduce the clutter and mess in your room, and turn it into a space that you actually want to spend time in!

Space Saving Furniture

Furniture has come a long way in the 21st century. While pretty furniture certainly has its appeal, it isn’t always practical, especially when you’ve only got a small space to work with.

There are thousands of affordable products on the market now that are designed for small spaces. Here’s a list of the furniture you’re likely to have which have a space-saving design available on the market:

Desk: As a student, a desk is essential. If you’re looking to save space, make sure you buy one that has storage compartments, such as drawers underneath. Alternatively, you could opt to go for a retractable/folding desk that nicely tucks away when you’ve finished using it.

Bed: While it’s possible to stuff things under your bed to hide them away from the world, it isn’t the most organised way of doing things. There are a wide variety of beds on the market with storage compartments underneath, perfect for clothes and books.

TV Stand: Ensure your TV stand doubles down as extra storage. Whether it’s shelves beneath the main platform, or drawers to pack away your games and DVDs, you’ll want to make the most out of this extra space.

Vacuum Clothing Bags

These vacuumed sealed clothing backs truly are the ultimate way to save space. They’re perfect for off-season clothes that you know you aren’t going to touch for a while, and will fit perfectly under your bed.

The process is simple; fold your clothes and place them in the bag, then suck the air out through a vacuum cleaner. The useless space inside the bag will quite literally be sucked out, leaving nothing but a compact block of clothes for you to tuck nicely away.

Make the Most Out of Vertical Space

We appreciate that landlords might not approve of you drilling holes in the walls to put up shelves, but there are many ways to use vertical space to your advantage without damaging the wall. You can use adhesive strips to mount shelves to the walls without damaging them - just make sure you don’t put too much weight on them.

Alternatively, why not buy some door hooks to hang up some of your clothes? It’s even possible to buy similar door hooks with storage compartments on them, perfect for make-up, toiletries, or other small bits!

Use Drawer Dividers

While we’re on the topic of clothes, let’s discuss drawer dividers. These revolutionary inventions not only keep your drawers clean, tidy, and organised, but also save space. Indeed, if you fold clothes in a way that keeps them compact, you might find that you suddenly have room for the clothes you thought you didn’t have room for!
