Seasonal Storage Tips

Harriet Butler

With the Christmas season once again behind us, you may have found yourself looking at a pile of decorations that you don’t know what to do with. You couldn’t be blamed if you have put off cramming everything back up into the attic space or into a cramped corner of a garage. We here at Green Oak Self Storage are here to offer you a solution. Self storage units are a popular option for storing seasonal items, whether that be the aforementioned Christmas decorations, or luggage, camping equipment, and much more.

7 Tips for Storing Seasonal Decorations

  1. Remove Loose Parts: When packaging and relocating a Christmas tree, wreath, or other holiday decorations, remove any loose parts to keep them in good shape. It's simpler and more secure to keep your decorations in sections rather than as a whole.

  2. Invest in Dividers: A strong box or plastic container is especially important when storing delicate ornaments or breakable items. Think about buying dividers to provide more protection for your decorations. Bulbs from lights or outdoor display components should not be packed adjacent to one another since a shift during the transfer could break these seasonal decorations.

  3. Pack Gently: While it is an understandable desire to maximise your space when keeping seasonal items in self storage, resist overfilling your boxes and tubs. Delicate, fragile objects should be packed individually, with blankets, bubble wrap, or foam cushioning within the boxes for added protection.

  4. Move Carefully: When loading your moving van, mark any boxes containing decorations as delicate so that the movers may treat each box with care. To reduce the danger of damage, avoid stacking heavy boxes or goods on top of your boxes and tubs with seasonal decorations.

  5. Store in Plain Sight: Whether you are relocating and require temporary storage, or you are decluttering your house and keeping seasonal decorations in self storage, it is ideal to have these items visible in your unit. This way, you'll have easy access to the products when the occasion calls for them. Also, be sure you're not piling outside decorations vertically. Each box should be placed on a stable structure with no things on top.

  6. Dismantle Large Decorations: While it may be easy to simply take ornaments from a Christmas tree and put it upright in a storage unit, you risk damaging your Christmas decorations. Disassemble huge decorations and remove any loose bits instead. Place the artificial tree's base in a box alongside each branch. Wrap fragile things and remove glass elements from the base of the displays to avoid damage. It is preferable to store your Christmas decorations in sections rather than as a whole.

  7. Mark Your Boxes: The most important aspect of ensuring the safety of your Christmas decorations is the actual move to a self-storage unit. Label each box or container as fragile, and avoid stacking heavy items on top of boxes labelled with Christmas decorations.

Storing an Artificial Christmas Tree

It may appear simple to casually throw your Christmas tree into a storage unit standing erect and on its stand, but if you don't implement these recommendations, you may be shortening the life of your artificial tree.

  • Remove everything from the tree such as lights, tinsel, baubles.

  • Separate the tree into parts and remove the base.

  • If you retained the package the tree came in, fold it back into this box.

  • Put the heavier items in the box first to avoid damaging the tree.
