Moving Home Packing Tips

Harriet Butler

It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that there are a million things to think about when moving home. This is especially true when you have a lot of belongings, and it can feel overwhelming when you begin to think about how you’re going to move them from A to B.

Although it’s a daunting task, there are plenty of things you can do to make moving home less stressful, and a big part of that is the packing. Let’s take a look at some ideas to help streamline and consolidate your packing for the big day!

Start Early

This one might sound obvious, but you would be surprised about how many people come into our facility extremely stressed because they’ve not started packing until the last minute. Sometimes people underestimate how long packing will take, while others are informed of their moving day close to the wire and are taken by surprise.

To give yourself enough time to pack without feeling overwhelmed, we’d recommend starting at least 2 months before your move date. Begin with the belongings you don’t use often, or don’t need for your day-to-day. If you begin with the non-essential items, it’ll help streamline things when you need to start packing everything up.

Take The Time To Declutter

By starting early, you’ll have plenty of time to think about what you actually need, and what can be donated, recycled, sold, or thrown away. Moving house is the perfect opportunity to get rid of those belongings that have been taking up unnecessary space. Decluttering can be an arduous process of many of us - especially the sentimental ones - but if you’re serious about decluttering, it’s important to be strict with yourself. Make things easier for yourself by making gifts of the things you don’t want, whether that be to friends and family or charity.

Be Tactical With Your Valuables

When there are so many items being placed into boxes, it can be easy to lose track of where you’ve put certain items. Best practice when moving is to organise your boxes systematically, and name each box using a pen. This is especially true for your valuables, which should all be placed in a box, rather than splitting them up. This prevents things from getting lost or misplaced. You should also consider writing an inventory list - ideally for everything - but at the bare minimum for your valuable items.

Green Oak Self Storage

Of course, another thing to consider while packing is to make use of a self-storage facility, such as Green Oak Self Storage. Based near Tamworth, we have over 100 safe and secure storage units in a variety of sizes, allowing you to safely store as little or as much as you would like. We get a lot of customers who are in the process of moving, and they tell us that storing their items during the move helps them manage the whole process much better. If you would like to book a unit or learn more, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
