How To Store Your Clothes Long Term

Harriet Butler

We’ve all been there; one day we open our wardrobes or chest of drawers and suddenly realize that they’re overflowing with clothes, many of which we don’t wear often or haven't worn for a long time. While we’d always recommend donating unwanted clothes to somebody less fortunate - whether that's a charity, family member, or friend - if you want to keep your clothes then there are plenty of solutions to help reclaim some of that wardrobe space. Let’s take a look.

Why Storing Your Clothes Properly Is Important

While it might be tempting to throw your clothes in a box, shove them up into the loft and then forget about them for a few years, you’ll likely find that they'll be ruined when you dig them out again. However, if you go down this route you may find that your clothes have been infected with mould, eaten by moths, or have a musty smell that you won’t be able to get rid of no matter how much you wash them.

Thankfully, there are a few simple things you can do to prevent this.

Wash and Dry Your Clothes

It may seem like a no-brainer, but we are pretty confident that many will not take the time to properly wash and dry their clothes before putting them into storage. This stage is essential, because any unwashed stains or dirt on your clothes is going to get much worse while in storage.

Similarly, if you fail to thoroughly dry your clothes, you’re going to find a lot of mold when you unpack them further down the road, and the musty smell will be difficult to get out.

Buy Air Tight Containers

There are a couple of different options you can go for when it comes to keeping your clothes air tight. Vacuum bags are a good space saving option, although these might not be suitable for storing items for a long time. A few months to a year should be OK, but if you wish to store items for longer, plastic crates are a better choice. You can easily store these one on top of each other, plus the transparent casing makes it easier to see what you’ve packed, and where.

Store In A Suitable Location

When it comes to a location for storing your clothes, temperature is key. As a rule, clothes should be kept in a room where the temperature never gets warmer than 23.C, with a relative humidity of 55%. Similarly, you should ensure that your clothes are kept in a space that is dry and dark. Follow these rules and your clothes will stay in great condition, long after you put them away.
