Whether you are moving home or office, or you just have an influx of devices, you may have found yourself inundated with electronics with nowhere to put them. Our storage units located in Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield can help with this!
You may be asking ‘what if I need to store these pieces of electronic equipment for a longer period of time?’ and ‘are there any measures I need to take to ensure the safe storage of my items?’ We here at Green Oak Self Storage will dive into the different precautions you can take in this blog to help you prepare your items properly.
1) Store in original packaging
If you happen to still own the original packaging your electronics came in, you could use it as a storage solution. As the packaging was designed specifically to house these items for warehouse storage and shipping, it can effectively protect your device.
2) Climate Control
Changes in temperature can create condensation inside a traditional storage unit, so keeping electronics in a set temperature range can go a long way to keeping them dry.
3) Protect your screens Because the screen is typically the most fragile component of the majority of electronic devices, extra precautions must be taken to ensure it does not become damaged. Here are some pointers on how to keep your screen safe during storage and transportation:
Use non-abrasive padding
Secure the padding mentioned above with wrapping plastic to prevent slipping during transportation.
Store devices/screens upright
Consider covering with a dust cloth
4) Organise your cords
Long-term storage of cords can cause them to retain the shape that they are stored in, which is why it is important to coil and secure them properly. Attempting to bend a chord against its current shape can put undue strain on the protective casing, leading to cracks or damage. Once they're organised and secure, place them in a lidded rubber bin or buy a cord organiser. Labelling the cords can also be beneficial.
5) Check your owner’s manual
Information such as ideal temperatures and sometimes even special preparations are frequently included in the owner's manual. If you are still unsure about what steps to take to properly and safely store your device you can contact the manufacturer for extra information.
6) Save/Backup your data
Electronics are not built to be left unused for long durations intended to be sat on for extended periods of time. So, while it is possible to store electronics safely, it is best practice to keep your data backed up on a cloud or external hard drive.
7) Mark boxes It is important to remember to label the boxes according to the item's stored orientation. You don't want to go through the motions of properly packing a television, computer, or other electronic device only to have it sit upside down and potentially get damaged. This also applies to transporting the items as well.
