How to Live a Maximalist Lifestyle with Self Storage

Harriet Butler

Although minimalist living seems to be THE trend at the moment (and even we here at Green Oak Self Storage have written a blog about it) it isn’t the only way to live. We believe that it is okay to like owning things, it can be comforting, a way to express yourself, or a way to hold onto different memories. However, it can be quite difficult to find a home for all of these beloved things and a cluttered living space is never ideal. Self storage can be a great solution for those items that you wish to keep but do not want to see or need to use on a daily basis. Even though minimalism is the lifestyle trend now, it is not for everyone. Some of us can’t live with five items of clothing and zero home decorations save for a singular house plant. And you don’t have to — if having a house filled with things brings you joy, then these things shall stay. Let no fleeting internet trend dictate how you should live your life. However, too much stuff can also be stressful and even hazardous to health, so here are some storage tips for the maximalist home.

Hobbies

Perhaps you have a hobby that requires different equipment depending on the weather? If this is the case, there could be stretches of time spanning months that certain pieces of equipment aren’t getting used and are only taking up precious space in your home. Or perhaps your hobby includes larger items such as canoes, paddleboards, and more which even when in frequent use can still take up lots of your living space. Self storage solutions are the way to go in housing your items without overcrowding the footprint of your house.

Rotate Your Items

Cycling through your belongings assures that if you have duplicates of each item, they will each be utilised at some point. This prevents the surplus things from taking up too much space for storage. This may be done with tableware, clothing, and even make-up. Things that are not in use can be stored.

Find a storage system for yourself and stick to it

A system of storing that is both functional and simple to use is also necessary for producing order in chaos. You can experiment with a range of items such as boxes, cabinets, and boards, combining clear and solid containers. Make certain that it is a system that you will stick to and remember. You may note down the inventory of each box or take photos of where a specific group of objects is stored. Some experimentation may be required, and certain solutions may be more effective than others!

Declutter Consistently

While maximalists frequently find it difficult to let go of items, one of the tricks to having a cohesive, maximalist house is to make it appear as if every object was designed to be there. That includes removing the truly old, tattered objects, as well as unnecessary items such as packaging. Dividing up your tidying into portions also means you'll have more mental resources to determine what kind of storage you'll need and how to effectively arrange your goods.
