Lockdown is easing and business is picking back up now that people are beginning to feel more comfortable to move into the homes that have been on hold for them. Our most common call this month has been from frantic home movers waiting for new homes to be finished while sites have been closed due to COVID-19 and their older houses need to complete.
So, when you need to make the move and store your furniture here is a list of our top do’s and don’ts:
1. Clean every item thoroughly..
This may seem like such a laborious task in the grand scheme of things but dirt is not kind when left on furniture and you will thank us when you open your dining room table back up and it is gleaming like new again.
2. Take time to take furniture apart..
This one may sound very obvious, but we do see tables and corner sofas arrive in entire pieces. Yes, you may be able to navigate doorways but just think how much easier it would be if it was in smaller pieces and you are less likely to bang or scrape it too!
3. Watch out for glass..
We hope this is one that everyone does for your safety as well as your items protection. Nobody wants to go to A&E for stitches in the middle of a house move or have to replace a priceless family item. For glasses and other glassware, use a medium-sized box rather than a large box, which may get too heavy and awkward to move. You'll also need packing paper, newsprint, towels, or other soft material—anything that can be easily wrapped around each glass or set of glasses. You can use bubble-wrap, but remember that it's hard to recycle and expensive to buy.
4. Don’t over fill your unit..
A storage unit can take a lot more than you might first think but don’t overfill it. Stop and think and what you might want out first when emptying or for a long term rental what you are going to need to take out most often and put this at the front. Furniture can get damaged or marked so try and put sheets around if stacking.
5. Watch out for food..
This sounds silly but don’t forget to check for food before putting your items into your self storage unit. An old chocolate wrapper will stick to things and peel off paint work, check, check and check again!
