5 Tips to Help You Organise Your Storage Space

Harriet Butler

Create an Inventory

It's tough to remember everything when putting a lot of things in storage. While larger items like a bed or sofa are simple to recall, smaller goods like artwork, photos, electronics, and clothing are frequently overlooked or forgotten in storage. It is recommended to keep a list of everything inside the unit to ensure that nothing is lost and to help you easily keep track of everything you are storing. This can be accomplished by recording each item in a spreadsheet as you work your way through the packing process. You may also want to create a map or floorplan of your storage space indicating where your belongings are placed inside the unit.

Label boxes or use clear storage bins

Plastic containers make keeping track of what's in your storage facility much easier. Clear plastic bins, unlike cardboard boxes, allow you to see what's within a container without having to sift through it. This will make finding what you need whenever you need it easier and faster. Also, clearly label each box with a permanent pen or printed labels. Make sure the labelled side of the box faces the front of the storage unit so you can see it when you walk in.

Store items correctly

It is important to ensure that all of your items are stored properly. You can read how to correctly store things like your clothes and electronics in our dedicated blogs.

Place frequently used items at the front

There's a good chance you'll use some objects more regularly than others. These items should be stored in the front of your storage unit in clearly labelled boxes or containers. Placing them near the door in an easily accessible location will spare you the hassle of having to sift through piles of boxes each time you visit the storage facility.

Utilise vertical space

Remember to pack your possessions vertically when organising your storage container. Furniture should be placed straight and boxes should be piled high. Take advantage of the increased storage space if you're storing bookshelves or anything else with a shelf. Consider adding extra shelving to the storage container to provide room for smaller boxes and items. If your storage unit is exceptionally tall, you might want to store a collapsible ladder or step ladder inside with your contents.
