5 Common Self Storage Mistakes and How Not To Make Them

Harriet Butler

So, you have decided that you need to store some of your possessions in a self storage unit. But are you sure that you have made all the necessary preparations? Read our blog below to avoid some of the most common mistakes!

1. Underestimating Required Space

In an attempt to save money you may be tempted to opt for a smaller unit and overpack in order to fit as much in as possible. However, this can not only potentially cause damage to your items, it can also create hazards for yourself when you retrieve your items. It is important to be realistic about the amount of space you need. If you are unsure about the unit size you may require you can always ask us! Our years of experience will help you choose the right storage unit for you and your needs.

2. Failing to Plan

Making a quick note as you pack can save you from getting a major headache when it comes to retrieving your items further down the line. Keeping a basic inventory and numbering or labelling your boxes will help you to keep track of your items. It will also make it easier for you to retrieve individual items without having to go through your entire unit.

3. No Insurance

Make sure that your items are protected with the appropriate insurance cover. Whilst it may seem like just another item on your to-do list that you will have to check off, skipping this step could end up being potentially disastrous.

It is possible that you are already covered under your home insurance but it is a good idea to check that not only are you covered but you are aware of the limitations and happy with the policy.

Additionally, it may be worth your while to talk to the storage facility you have chosen to see what insurance coverage they have in place, or any extra insurance they may offer, and at what extra cost.

4. Not Considering Item Type

It may seem like an obvious thing to mention, that heavy items should be stacked at the back and bottom of the storage unit, but it truly cannot be understated.

It would be disheartening to find that delicate or fragile items have been broken under the weight of heavier storage boxes. So, when packing and making your inventory, it is a good idea to take into consideration the weight of items and the overall weight of your storage boxes.

5. Not Leaving Access Space

It is understandable to want to get the most bang for your buck and fill every nook and cranny of the unit with your belongings. However, you may find yourself needing an item at the very back of the unit before long with no way to get to it. This is thankfully avoidable with a little forethought. By leaving a walkway down the centre of the unit as you pack, you will easily be able to navigate to the items you need the most.
